Instructions

The motor comparison tool is intended to estimate and compare the operational costs of two different motors. Examples include replacing an existing motor with a more efficient motor, replacing an oversized motor with an appropriately sized motor, or comparing the operational cost of a rewound motor to a new motor.

The efficiency lookup tool is provided as a reference in the case motor efficiencies are not known. All data presented by this tool are nominal, full load efficiencies of common sizes of industrial motors. Feel free to contact the Clearinghouse to better estimate the efficiency of the motor in your specific application.

Inputs

  • Average Annual Energy Rate - the average annual marginal cost per kWh of electic energy in your facility.
  • Average Annual Demand Rate - the average annual marginal cost per kW of peak demand in your facility.
  • Annual Operating Hours - the number of hours the motor runs each year.
  • Horsepower - the nameplate nominal horsepower rating of the motor.
  • Load Factor - the percentage of nominal load for the motor. e.g. Enter "50" for 50% of full load.
  • Efficiency - the nameplate nominal efficiency for the motor. For a more accurate estimate, use the actual efficiency of the motor at the operating point.

Outputs

  • Peak Demand - the highest demand of the motor, in kW, at the given operating point.
  • Annual Energy Usage - the number of kWh consumed by the motor at the given operating point and operating hours.
  • Annual Operating Cost - the cost of demand plus energy for the motor with the given inputs.
