Natural Gas

Natural gas is one of the largest sources of energy for homes and businesses in the United States and its popularity continues to grow. During the last decade, the use of natural gas in the United States increased by 35 percent and is expected to continue to grow by another 40 percent by 2015. About 87 percent of the natural gas consumed in the U.S. is produced within the borders of the United States.

Arkansas has substantial natural gas reserves. The state's natural gas production currently accounts for about one percent of national output. Companies are beginning to extract small amounts of natural gas from coalbed methane deposits in Arkansas. Arkansas has the Fayetteville shale natural gas field, which is estimated to contain 20 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Arkansas has four natural gas distribution companies that serve our communities.
